TM Dysfunction (TMD)
TM Dysfunction (TMD), also referred to as TMJ, is a condition affecting the temporomandibular joint and its associated structures. TMD symptoms are characterized by pain, discomfort, joint sounds and deviated or diminished range of movements.
The temporomandibular joints are among the most utilized joints in the body, due to their prolonged use during chewing, talking, singing, yawning, etc. TM Dysfunction means that the lower jaw is not in its proper relationship to the upper jaw. This frequently results in a dislocation of the protective disc anteriorly as the lower jaw assumes a position further back than normal.
The American Dental Association stated that 34% of the population of the U.S. suffers from TM dysfunction. TM disorders are progressive and worsen over time; therefore, it is imperative that the problem be treated as early as possible.
